Participant Allison Hilton Designated a The First Tee Scholar

High School Senior Allison Hilton has been one of 90 high school seniors in The First Tee designated a The First Tee Scholar Class of 2018-2019.  The First Tee Scholars Program is a distinction awarded to teen participants who excel in academics, leadership, character development, and chapter and community involvement.  Allison joins Topanga Sena (Class of 2017-2018), as our two The First Tee Designated Scholars. Allison has been a participant at The First Tee of Central Florida since January 2015, joining a session after her younger brother Scott got involved in our program. Allison is truly one of the most courteous young ladies we have ever met and although she exhibits all of The First Tee Nine Core Values and Life Skills the one that stands out the most to us is Goal Setting. Since we have known Allison she has always wanted to be in the medical field specializing in pediatrics. While participating in our Birdie Level curriculum, Allison began creating her goal ladder (for golf, health, and future careers) and realized that she wanted to become a nurse practitioner. She immediately began to take the steps needed, which were under her control (a The First Tee lesson) to help her attain her goal. She enrolled in the nursing program at her high school and has completed 40 clinical hours at a nursing home, earned her certification as a CMAA (Certified Medical Administrative Assistant) and she is waiting to sit for her boards to become a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant). Even more impressive is that she researched colleges and determined on her own which college would be the best for her to achieve her goals and has been accepted to the University of South Florida, majoring in nursing. Her mom, who is extremely supportive told me “I didn’t even know she had applied and had been accepted, she’s done everything on her own.” Upon graduation in May, Allison will enroll in the University of South Florida. The designation of Scholar brings with it eligibility for select named scholarships offered by partnering family foundations of The First Tee HQ. The scholarships vary in value.

Cole Highlights His Experience at the PURE Insurance Championship to Benefit The First Tee

Written by Cole Chastain

September 25-29, 2018 I had the privileged of representing The First Tee of Central Florida at The Pure Insurance Championship Impacting The First Tee. The week was amazing, filled with lots surprises, fun people, great golf, and majestic scenery. After registration Tuesday morning at the renowned Pebble Beach course, I played a practice round with other participants from around the country representing their The First Tee Chapters at the Poppy Hills Course. Tuesday evening the participants were surprised at a welcome party and concert with a TaylorMade embroidered golf bag and was introduced to our PGA Champion. I was matched with Wes Short Jr. and was hopeful with his record on the tour we could propel ourselves towards a great weekend and make the cut for Sunday.  I also participated in a putting competition, which I would found out Friday night I won by 3 stokes. Wednesday, I played my first round of golf at the World-renowned Pebble Beach, in a word “Majestic”. That night, I attended the Legends and Leaders dinner and enjoyed listening to the banter between Alfonso Ribeiro, ABC Television Host and Actor, and the other distinguished guests. I had the honor of meeting Tom Watson, who is known for winning eight major championships and heading the PGA Tour money list five times between 1970-1980. Thursday, I started my day at 7:30am with another practice round at Poppy Hills.  As I stared into the Marine Layer (thick fog) I found out I was paired with two great golfers, Glen Day and Charlie Rymer along with another First Tee Jr from Baltimore, MD.  These guys were a hoot.  They helped me read the greens, adjust tee shots and work on my jokes.  Mr. Rymer and Mr. Day were obviously lifelong golf friends and witnessing their exchanges was priceless. Thursday night I attended the Slice Party located at the Cheveron STEM Zone just off hole 17 at Pebble Beach. The STEM Zone consisted of many scientific methods and theories related to golf and physics. My favorite exhibit was the giant Newton’s Cradle. My favorite hole at Pebble Beach had to be hole 7 because of the view, distance and the wind effect., but I have to say 17 was a close second (my birdie hole). I enjoyed the challenging perspective from the greens while putting so close the Pacific Ocean. Friday was the start of the official tournament with a tee time of 1:04 pm at Poppy Hills.  Wes Short Jr. and myself teed off with two Amateurs for a 5 hour round. Admittedly, it was not the best round of golf for either of us but we pressed on throughout the afternoon.  Together we finished 1 over par. Friday nights activities were the best yet with the Core Values Dinner & a live concert by Train. The food was amazing and the concert was a lot of fun. It was held on the lawn adjacent to the 18th green at Pebble Beach. My name was called and I was able to go up on stage to receive a gift card to the Pebble Beach pro shops as the prize for winning the putting competition held Tuesday night. Saturday morning came early with an 8:30 AM Tee Time back at the Pebble Beach course. Wes Short Jr. and I had a lot of ground to make up from Friday’s round. We were up for the challenge and really took advantage of the views and experiences along the course. My family was able to watch the round and their support was much appreciated. I had a memorable birdie on hole 17 and the crowd went wild from the balcony. I finished off the round with a par on hole 18. We did not make the cut for Sunday but rather participated in the Core Values Cup at Poppy Hills. It was a best ball and scramble format similar to the Ryder Cup. I was paired with three other The First Tee participants from all over the country. We enjoyed a more relaxed environment and had fun playing together. An amazing, memorable, inspiring, exceptional, unbelievable week of meeting new people, playing golf and experiencing new things. I am very grateful for all the sponsors especially PURE Insurance and support of The First Tee who made this week all it could be.

Sara Highlights Her Experience as a Junior Reporter at the API

At this year’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, Sara, a 16-year-old sophomore at University High School and member of The First Tee of Central Florida since 2013, served as WKMG News 6’s junior golf correspondent shadowing Sports Director Jamie Seh.  Read below as Sara blogged about her experience.
On March 14, 2018, I was invited by the First Tee to participate as a Junior Reporter at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. As a participant with the First Tee, I have been able to learn about the many aspects of golf, from playing the game to maintaining the course. However, I had never really considered the role of on course reporters! I soon learned that I would be shadowing Jamie Seh, the Sport’s Director for WKMG. I was so excited to have this opportunity, but was not sure what to expect. I figured I would be following Ms. Seh around the course, attend the day’s Press Conference, and watch her do interviews. When the day came, I was joined by one of my First Tee Coaches, and we headed to the tournament. When I met Ms. Seh, she was very welcoming, and I could tell she was as excited as I was!  We quickly discussed a run-down for the day, and began by heading to the media tent, where the day’s Press Conference had begun.

Ms. Seh pointed out her cameraman, Ryan, and asked if I’d like to do an interview. Going into this day, I knew that my conducting an interview was a possibility, but I hadn’t anticipated it actually happening. I immediately said yes, and brainstormed possible questions to ask. As soon as the Press Conference was over,I was given a microphone, put in front of the camera, and given the go ahead. First, I interviewed Ms. Marci Doyle about her position as Chief Operations Officer of The Tournament, followed by a few questions with Mr. Sam Saunders about the tournament and what it meant for him. Everything seemed to happen so fast, from being handed the microphone to actually asking questions, it was a whirlwind. This was my first time doing anything like this, and I was so nervous. But by the time I’d finished the interviews, I was ready to go again!

We then headed to the driving range, and walked around the course. I was able to speak with Ms. Seh and learn about her background and her career. It was so much fun to follow her around the tournament, and see her in action! Before we wrapped up our day, we headed back to the driving range where Rickie Fowler would be doing a group interview. Little did I know, I would be able to have a one-on-one interview with him as well! I was watching and listening carefully as a group of reporters interviewed Rickie, and stood right behind Ms. Seh. I was not able to ask a question during the interview, but Ms. Seh was quick to make sure I wouldn’t miss this opportunity. After the interview, she quickly pulled Rickie aside to see if he would be interested in letting me ask him some questions. Sure enough, he was! I was even more nervous this time, as I would be interviewing one of my personal idols! However, I was immediately put to ease when we started the interview. Rickie was so kind and made my job seem a lot easier. By the time I finished interviewing Rickie, I knew my day could not get any better!

Overall, it was such a unique experience, and I learned a lot about sports reporting and journalism. Throughout the day I was even able to meet other golf pros, such as Rory McIlroy! And this was all possible thanks to the First Tee and Miss Jamie Seh. I truly appreciated this experience, and was so happy to follow Ms. Seh. Her kindness and motivation to make this a true learning experience made it a day I will never forget!

Following the day, Jamie Seh highlighted Sara on their newscast, below is a video highlighting some of the interviews Sara conducted.

Q&A with Program Director Sherry Dircks to Celebrate International Women’s Day

Today, marks International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women.  In a report released by the National Golf Foundation in April of 2017, the number of females in junior golf now a third of all junior golfers, nearly double of what it was in 1995.  Girls under the age of 18 is the fastest-growing segment of the golf population.
To celebrate today, we asked Sherry Dircks, the Program Director of The First Tee of Central Florida and the Site Director of LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of Central Florida, a couple of questions about the game of golf and its importance in the growth and development of young girls.  Sherry has been a professional golfer since 1990 and a Class A Member of the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Division since 1993.  She has had roles as a Director of Instruction at a number of courses, taught at John Jacobs Golf Schools, worked for the Executive Women’s Golf Association, and has held numerous roles throughout The First Tee and LPGA-USGA Girls Golf.
Being a long-time participant in the golf industry, how have you seen the importance of golf in young girls’ lives? Whether its golf or any sport, statistics show that girls who play sports are less likely to be involved in an unintended pregnancy; more likely to get better grades in school, less likely to use illicit drugs, and more likely to graduate than girls who do not play sports.  Additionally, young girls who play sports have higher levels of confidence and self-esteem and lower levels of depression. Research shows that among senior business women in the C-suite today, 94% played sports and over half played at a university level — suggesting a strong correlation between their success in sports and their success in business. At The First Tee, the biggest change I have seen in our young girls through their participation in the game of golf is their development of confidence and the belief in themselves.  The longer we can retain young girls in The First Tee and Girls Golf, we have seen their confidence and their belief in themselves grow and therefore they feel can achieve and do anything they want to do. I believe a perfect example of the importance of golf in the lives of young girls is this quote we received from one of our high school participants. “I usually had doubted my decisions and ability to be able to be great at golf or any other sport. I typically was hesitant to participate in any activity because I didn’t feel that I would be good enough. Today, I am now able to know that I am worth it! I can and should participate even if I am not familiar with an activity. Through the First Tee, golf has taught me that with practice and hard work you can accomplish most anything. The First Tee’s Nine Core Values has served as a guideline on how I can succeed in life to better believe in myself and believe in others. Being able to go out on the golf course and hit a great shot gives me the confidence that I have come a long way and I could do pretty much anything I set my mind to. The coaches and participants are my family and they support me and cheer me on. They never judge or humiliate me; instead they provide a safe environment where I can be comfortable to be me!” With the rise of LPGA Superstars, what do you see for the future of women’s golf? With many of the LPGA’s Superstars underneath the age of 30 and embracing social media, young girls now have the ability to follow their favorite players as they travel the world and learn more about them than ever before.  Through their social media presence as well as increased television exposure, young girls now have the opportunity to see what possibilities are out there for them.  And while for some it may be the opportunity that they can play the game professionally, others may learn about different career opportunities throughout the industry such as fashion and design, golf course architecture, as well as equipment manufacturing.  I believe that as this generation of young girls become adults, we will begin to see more and more females land leadership roles in the golf industry and the board room. What is the importance of the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf Program to The First Tee of Central Florida? Our LPGA-USGA Girls Golf Program is the perfect complement to our The First Tee Programs, providing girl-centric environments to learn the game of golf.  Participating in our Girls Golf Clinics provide girls a great opportunity for girls to be girls, to socialize, participate non-golf opportunities where they create lasting friendships, and just be themselves.  While our classes in The First Tee far exceed industry average (37% versus an industry average of 25%), our classes still are predominately male dominated.  During our Girls-Golf Classes our girls don’t have to worry about the boys being there.  Fun is our focus for our Girls Golf Program, and, once we have the girls’ attention, our golf instruction helps prepare them for a lifetime of enjoyment of the game while also inspiring them to feel confident, build positive self-esteem and live active and healthy lives. Why is it important for young girls to have accessibility to programs like Girls-Golf?   As I previously mentioned, participation in sports, particularly golf can have positive effects on the growth and development of young girls.  By providing girl-centric programs led by strong female role models, we provide girls with the platform they need to become high-achievers in their personal goals, boost their self-esteem and experience competition in a fun, supportive environment. Additionally the impact of participation in sports for a young girl can have results far beyond their formative years. Executive women believed that sports helped them in a variety of ways including:
  • 86% of the women felt sports helped them to become more disciplined;
  • 69% of the women felt sports helped them develop leadership skills;
  • 68% of the women believed their past in sports helped them learn to deal with failure; and
  • 59% of the women thought sports gave them a competitive edge over others in the business world.

Donor Surpasses Lifetime Giving of $200,000 to The First Tee of Central Florida

The First Tee Trustee Surpasses $200,000 Giving Milestone

Private Wealth Advisor Chris Barley Becomes Largest Benefactor of Central Florida Chapter

When The First Tee of Central Florida was founded over five years ago, the founding Board of Directors wanted to make sure that the organization had an underlying focus of impacting the lives of young people typically not introduced to the game of golf.  To do this, The First Tee of Central Florida subsidizes fees for its Golf and Life Skills Experience Program and maintains a policy that no child ever be turned away for an inability to pay.  Additionally, The First Tee works with local schools and after-school programs to introduce the game of golf, its core values, and healthy habits to young people without any cost to the child.  To have this impact, The First Tee of Central Florida relies heavily upon the generosity of those in our community to help achieve those goals.  Since our inception in 2012, The First Tee of Central Florida has received generous support from numerous benefactors, however, no one has been more giving to the chapter than Mr. Chris Barley. Barley, Managing Director and Private Wealth Advisor for Ameriprise Financial, has been involved with the local chapter of The First Tee since before it was even founded. Barley is a Trustee of The First Tee, committing to giving $1 million to the First Tee at both the local and national levels over a 10-year time period. In his role as a private wealth advisor, Barley was entrusted with funds from the estate of Central Florida ophthalmologist Dr. David P. Honey after his passing in 2008. Knowing that Dr. Honey was passionate about golf, Barley sought out an organization that could utilize Dr. Honey’s gift and impact as many people as possible. While on the course one afternoon, Barley was reminded of an organization he had briefly heard about in passing years before, and knew that The First Tee was the perfect fit for Dr. Honey’s gift. As the person entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the donation, Barley got in touch with the right people at The First Tee’s Home Office and became involved in seeing to it that a Central Florida chapter was founded. “With gifts of more than $200,000 to the chapter to date, Mr. Barley has become The First Tee of Central Florida’s largest donor. His annual gift allows us to make a tremendous impact on local youth, and we are so grateful for his continued commitment to our organization,” said Thomas Lawrence, Executive Director of The First Tee of Central Florida. In addition to being a Trustee of The First Tee, Barley is also involved as an Advisory Board Member for the Central Florida chapter. His expertise in the careful and thoughtful investment of funds and talent has helped to grow the Central Florida organization to become one of the strongest chapters in the country. Just this past August, the First Tee of Central Florida celebrated its five-year anniversary. During the past five years, the organization has shared its youth development programming with more than 90,000 local youth, positively impacting these children through programs delivered in 123 Central Florida elementary schools, 22 after-school programs, and on 10 golf courses throughout the region. “Without the support of benefactors like Mr. Barley, this widespread impact would not be possible.  We truly appreciate all that he does for our organization’s mission and vision,” added Lawrence. You can join Chris Barley and our efforts to positively impact the lives of Central Florida youth by donating to The First Tee of Central Florida today!

Get to know chessson hadley

Born in Raleigh, North Carolina on July 5, 1987, Chesson Hadley has always been involved in sports. He took up golf at the age of 6, and broke par for the first time by age 12. He was a three-time All-State performer during his high school years as well as a five-year letterwinner at North Raleigh Christian Academy. Hadley won every conference match during his senior year. It wasn’t just golf that kept him going, though. Chesson was also class president and a member of the National Honor Society. His classmates voted him most comedic. That energetic spirit helps to guide his game on the golf course. Choosing golf was an easy decision, as Hadley quickly began to flourish. He earned a scholarship to Georgia Tech where he was a three-time All-American, winning the Carpet Capital Collegiate as well as the ACC Championship his senior year. In 2008, he represented the United States on the Palmer Cup team. This great success paved the way for his professional golf career. Hadley turned professional in 2010 after graduating with a degree in Business Management. He played on the eGolf Tour for 2 years before making it to the Web.com Tour during 2012 PGA Tour Qualifying School. He won twice on the Web.com Tour in 2013, winning his hometown event, the Rex Hospital Open, as well as the Tour Championship. He finished with the highest combined earnings during the regular season and the playoffs and was a rookie on the PGA Tour in 2013. During his debut season on the PGA TOUR, Chesson came out strong, winning the Puerto Rico Open. He had 4 top-10 finishes during the season and went on to receive the honor of 2014 PGA TOUR Rookie of the year.  In 2017, Chesson was named the Web.com Tour Player of the Year winning twice at the ECOM Health Challenge and Albertsons Boise Open presented by Kraft Nabisco. It was in Durham, North Carolina that Kevin truly began to ignite his passion for golf. His golf game steadily improved and by his senior year Kevin captained the team. After graduating from Duke University in 2001, Kevin jumped in his mother’s Nissan Altima and drove to South Dakota for the start of the Dakota’s Tour.

Hard work pays off

The next six years would serve as the training ground necessary for Kevin to become a successful touring golf professional. He burned out three different cars, crossed the country multiple times, and racked up over 300,000 miles in pursuit of his golfing career. He became a veteran of the Dakotas Tour, Gateway Tour, Hooters Tour, and US Pro Golf Tour. Kevin’s dedication and hard work during his tenure on the mini tour circuit improved his game year after year. Finally, 2007 became the breakout year for which Kevin had worked so hard.

An Exciting Rookie year

After three wins on the mini tours in 2007, Kevin earned his PGA Tour card through 2007 Qualifying school. An exciting rookie year on the PGA Tour, with four top-10 finishes and a 35th place finish in the FedEx Cup, paved the way for Kevin’s win of the 2009 Kodak Challenge in his sophomore year. He further improved his standing on tour during the next three years with 14 top-10 finishes and a 25th place finish in the FedEx Cup in 2010.

First PGA TOUR victory

Kevin recorded his first PGA Tour victory in 2013 at the Tampa Bay Championship, and followed it up with a second win in 2014 at the Travelers Championship. Kevin closed his final round of the Travelers Championship with seven consecutive birdies, which set a record for the most consecutive birdies made to win a tournament.

Birdie Level Participant Bobby gets a lesson on Facebook Live!

On Tuesday, January 31, 2017, Birdie Level Participant Bobby received a Facebook Live Lesson from 2008 PGA National Teacher of the Year and host of Golf Channel’s School of Golf, Martin Hall.  Below, Bobby highlights his experience from Martin Hall followed by the video of Bobby’s Facebook Live Lesson. Gripping the Game of Golf for a Better Performance Golf for me isn’t just a game, but rather a building block for success in life. Everyone in the game of golf can always improve their swing, their drive and overall performance. I constantly learn new ways to improve my performance and attitude as I grow with the game golf. When The First Tee of Central Florida and the Golf Channel provided me an opportunity to appear on their Golf Academy segment with School of Golf professional instructor Martin Hall, I was thrilled! I knew this was my opportunity to learn how to improve my game using my wedges. In their first Livestream on Facebook, Martin Hall first examined my swing by capturing a video image on his phone that he was able to refer to and focus on my club face. What I learned was why my club face was closed. The answer to my question was simple, my grip. He helped improve my grip by placing my thumb more forward on the club. The results were proven effective immediately because when he asked me to swing with the corrected grip, the ball flight was straighter. His advice to me when correcting my grip was, “it should feel uncomfortable at first” because it takes time to form a good habit. As he said this, I thought about life and changing bad habits in my swing and how changes can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but with time can prove effective. Mr. Hall definitely knows the game of golf and I was honored to have been able to learn from the best. It was also amazing to have been in their new studio and be able to take a tour admiring autographs from the greatest players in golf who had visited the Golf Channel.  I was able to meet some very friendly staff and former Big Break champion, Blair O’Neal. Not only was this a new experience for the Golf Channel and myself using Livestream on Facebook, but a learning opportunity to use on the golf course in the future because using social media as a tutorial means is quick and accessible for anyone wanting to share their technique or to be able to refer to as a resource. Representing the First Tee of Central Florida has been a hole-in-one experience!
